Alastair’s career started at sea. Qualifying as a Master Mariner he came ashore and worked in a variety of roles in shipping, commodity marketing and port and rail operations before taking responsibility for the construction and ongoing operation of a fleet of large bulk carriers for Rio Tinto Marine. Alastair joined the Sustainable Shipping Initiative board on its inauguration and remains as co-chair. He was also on the inaugural board and chair of the World Ocean Council,  director and chair of RightShip Pty Limited and, after retiring, chair of the Sailors’ Society marine charity. Alastair remains a member of the Lloyd’s Register Classing Committee and is currently President of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology.
